Tips For Buying The Best Luggage.
The first thing you have to do when shopping for luggage is to keep an open mind because luggage and the way
people travel has changed dramatically in recent years.
Think of luggage as something that should be able to comfortably hold your belongings and make your travel more
enjoyable by taking the weight strain off of your back and shoulders.
You may not realize it but what you're really purchasing is a travel system with various features. Many brands
offer inter-connective bags for different needs. Consider the following features before you buy luggage:
Handles
For vertical luggage, a locking handle system is important because it prevents the handle from damage if you
decide to check it.
Wheels
Recessed wheels are preferred because they are less susceptible to damage. I favor larger, rubberized wheels
with ball bearings for smooth handling and longevity. Wheel the case on both carpeted and un-carpeted surfaces to
check the glide as well as the case's compatibility with your hand and height. Turn corners to check it's balance.
Outer shell
Hard sided cases protect contents but are heavy and clunky. Soft sided cases are great carry-on's but don't
check them if you're carrying fragile objects. Semi soft sided cases combine the benefits of hard and soft styles.
Material
For soft and semi soft cases nylon is the strongest followed by polyester (often combined) Material is measured
in denier - the higher the denier, the thicker the fiber. Look for tight dense weave.
Hardware
Handles and shoulder straps should be attached with multiple rivets for strength. Handles and shoulder straps
which are attached with rings should have solid metal rings- split rings can separate.
Zippers
Modern, synthetic zippers made of coils can self-repair when the slide is run back over the zipper, Metal
zippers with teeth are tricky to repair.
Luggage is a long term investment. Brand name luggage that has a strong warranty will be more serviceable over
the long haul because replacement parts should be readily available.
